Latin America started 2026 with a milestone: 66% of regional electricity generation comes from renewable sources, according to BNamericas. Hydropower accounts for 45%, but the most significant growth comes from solar and wind. Progress is uneven. Chile and Uruguay have surpassed 90% renewable generation, while Mexico and Argentina struggle. Mexico lost momentum after electricity sector reforms. Argentina shows recovery signs with Genneia and FinDev Canada investments. The report also highlights green hydrogen's growing role. Chile, Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay have national H2V strategies, with over 80 announced projects. The challenge is moving from announcements to final investment decisions.
