Colombia regulates battery energy storage, solving bottleneck for renewables
CREG's new regulation allows solar and wind energy storage for nighttime use, removing a major obstacle to renewable expansion. The measure is expected to accelerate new project development.

CREG's decision to regulate storage removes the main technical-regulatory obstacle to renewable expansion in Colombia. Stored energy can now be sold during peak hours, improving project economics. At least 2 GW in stalled projects are expected to be unlocked. ALAGER sees the Colombian initiative as a model for other Andean countries.
